NEW YORK FASHION WEEK REVIEW | SPRING/SUMMER '17

NEW YORK FASHION WEEK REVIEW | SPRING/SUMMER '17

If you've been following my blog for the past few years, you would know that as each fashion week concludes: Paris Haute Couture Week, New York Fashion Week, etc,, I review the collections that were shown.  This year, I've decided to switch things up a bit.  Instead of reviewing the shows because lets be honest, everyone is doing that I've decided to review and praise the street style of those who attend the New York Fashion Week shows.

More-so than ever, street style is popular not only on social media, but also in major fashion publications and websites.  No longer is it a trickle-down system, where the people are wearing what the designers are designing, but rather, a trickle-up system, where the street style kings and queens inspire what designers are creating for their collections.  Street style has become one of the most influential forms of fashion, and at New York Fashion Week in particular, the outfits that these bloggers, fashion-enthusiasts and everyone-in-between create are so creative and unique that I thought it as about time to give them some recognition.

WELCOME BACK, FEMININITY

Last year, athleisure wear was the trend of the moment.  Now, ruffles, pleats and ribbons are making a comeback and femininity is the new black. On the streets, off-the-shoulder tops and dresses have been prominent.  Back in the day, in addition to showing of your ankles (hot, right?), showing your bare décolletage was just as scandalous. Now, it's seen as sophisticated.  Many street style bloggers and fashion icons such as Olivia Palermo, have been rocking this look.  Either by wearing a cinched off-the-shoulder top or a one-shoulder top, exposing their bare shoulders.  In addition to this skin-exposing style, ruffles have also been a major trend.  Whether they're adorned to an off-the-shoulder dress/top, or cascading down the back or front of a skirt; they're everywhere.  I think these street-style stars are telling us to experiment with kicking off our Nikes and dipping our toes in something a bit sweeter.

LET'S TALK ABOUT TEXTURE. AND PATTERNS FOR THAT MATTER

Long live long floral print dresses. Three-cheers for cutout lace and flouncy tulle.  Patterns and texture have finally resurfaced into the fashion scene and minimalism is so last year.  A few years back, we got a small taste of mixing patterns, but that trend ended in a hot-minute and instead, fashionistas fell in love with plain white tee's and dark skinny jeans.  Now, prints are making a comeback, especially when paired with pieces that spark our sense of feel.  Fashion blogger and Instagram mavens such as Leonie Hanne and Karissa Marie have really been embracing this trend, by wearing heavily printed and intricate fabrics.  These ladies prove that more really is more and that's not necessarily a bad thing; embrace it.
