LEGGINGS ACTUALLY ARE PANTS
I hate the saying "leggings aren't pants". For one, the dictionary definition of pants are: a usually loose fitting outer garment for the lower part of the body (www.dictionary.com). I don't know about you, but I'm pretty sure that leggings fall under this category. Though I think that leggings indeed ARE pants, I found that there are a few ways that you should style leggings in order to make them "pant appropriate".
THE TUNIC TOP
Wearing a tunic top is BY FAR one of my favorite ways to style leggings. The flowy and drapey material flatters any body type. They hide all of your stomach imperfections but they also cover up your butt for a more modest option when wearing a tighter pant: leggings.
HOW TO STYLE THE TUNIC TOP
Step 1: Purchase a tunic top
Step 2: I love wearing boots with my tunic tops and leggings. Whether they're riding boots, knee high boots, or booties those are my go-to shoes for this outfit combination.
Step 3: Since it is fall, another way I love styling this outfit is with a cropped jacket on top. By pairing this look with a shorter jacket, you're able to get the full effect of a longer top with movement but still able to stay warm.
THE MINI SKIRT
I'm obsessed with skirts. They're comfortable a stylish but cause a major problem during the colder weather. A way that I recently discovered this past winter to incorporate skirts into my cold weather attire was to pair the skirt with leggings... THE PERFECT ENSEMBLE.
HOW TO STYLE THE MINI SKIRT
Step 1: Buy a mini skirt
Step 2: Depending on the weather, you may want to wear either a sweater, blouse, or a combination of both on top. My favorite way to wear the skirt and legging outfit is to take a chunky semi-cropped sweater and layer on necklaces and a scarf. If sweaters aren't your thing, I love taking a simple blouse then adding a cardigan on top for a chic look.
THE FIT AND FLARE
Fit and flare dresses remind me of a mullet: business on the top, party on the bottom. These dresses are great for dressing up your typical leggings. They are a full piece alternative to the mini skirt option, but add a HUGE amount of comfort to your day.
HOW TO STYLE THE FIT AND FLARE
Step 1: Buy a fit and flare dress
Step 2: Jewelry is a must. Since most fit and flare dresses are skater style, therefore causing them to be super simple, layering on jewelry is a definite YES! If you're more on the preppy side, statement necklaces are a great option, they add just the right amount of pop and amp up your dress a notch. If you're like me, and like being a little different, a favorite of mine is layering chain necklaces. I like to take a shorter chain then layer that with a medium chain with some pearls then take a longer pendant style necklace and have that layering as the longest causing a tri-layer necklace illusion. Necklaces are a great choice for these types of dresses. Another jewerly option is to wear thin bangles, they add the perfect amount of shimmer without clunking around.
Step 3: Since your dress is the main statement, a simple pair of black flats are your must have shoe for this outfit.
By incorporating these three style ideas into your legging outfits, you're able to look stylish and prevent stares from those who despise wearing leggings as pants. You're able to be comfortable but still look presentable. Leggings are the must have staple for fall, and all seasons if you know how to wear them correctly.
